Today in class, I learned that everything is a remix. Nothing is an original idea anymore. For example, the movie "Star Wars" was just a combination of clips and ideas from other movies. The band Led Zeppelin, most of their music was either a remix or sounded extremely similar to other artists. It was pretty interesting to realize back in the day, when things weren't as common now, that directors, bands, and designers took ideas from previous works and recreate it. What shocked me the most was the computer part of "Everything is a Remix". I always thought that Apple started is all. I forgot that Xerox even existed. It seems a bit unfair that Apple has all this popularity with their products and when they got their design from Xerox.
Another thing I was shown today was how the Irish people first started writing their own books. I never realized how much work it took to write just one book. When it showed a scene of the artist putting the gold paper over a letter and scratched around the letter "P". It was amazing how precise the artist had gotten to the outline of the shape. Makes me feel like the art we do now is nothing in comparison to the art works back then.
I was really interested in what I had learned today. I have never been all that interested in a history class, but I am looking forward to next weeks class. :)
